Imagine for a moment that you own an old rusty bucket filled with water (Congratulations).
You’ve owned it for a long time… but one day, your bucket springs a leak.
That’s the thing about rusty buckets: they always hold water until they don’t!
Did the bucket’s problem start the day it started leaking? Of course not.
Could you have avoided the bucket rusting through had you taken better care to maintain it when it was in its best possible condition?
Almost certainly.
Your body works in the same way.
When someone goes to the dentist with a toothache, did their problem start that morning? No! It came from months or years of neglect.
When someone is diagnosed with chronic hypertension or Type II diabetes, did they catch it from a co-worker that morning? No! The overwhelming majority of those cases are the culmination of years of terrible lifestyle choices.
Does it make sense to wait until something goes wrong with your health? Nope. Waiting for symptoms to show up before you do something about your health is like waiting until your bucket springs a leak before you decide to take action.
Or…
Does it make more sense to take as many reasonable, logical, scientifically-based steps to avoid sickness in the first place?
If this second option makes more sense to you, then welcome to Wellness Care… what is also known as “Genetically-Congruent Health Care.”
At its core, Genetically-Congruent Health Care is really simple:
- Provide your genes with everything they need to express health
- Avoid the things that will cause your genes to express illness
Simple enough, right?
There’ a LOT more to it than that, and there’s a lot of science you have to sift through to understand exactly what makes up those two things.
The important thing to remember as we go forward is that your DNA does not change over your lifetime. In fact, our entire genetic code has changed less than 0.02% since the days of the cavemen over 40,000 years ago. Crazy right?
So what changes?
The expression of your genes is what changes.
What changes the expression of your genes? The things you eat/drink, the way you move, the thoughts you think, and the environment in which you live have all been scientifically proven to alter which of your genes are turned on and which ones are turned off.
What controls the expression of our genes? Something called the epigenome.
Here’s an analogy I’ve used before to explain it. Suppose your DNA is a very tiny but very, very long piano keyboard. Your epigenome would be the tiny piano player. Even though she has all these keys to press, she only presses certain ones at certain times.
How does she decide which ones to press? She doesn’t. She presses keys and chords — expressing one gene or another — based purely on the signals she receives.
Your lifestyle choices determine what signals she receives!
How cool is that? Basically, at the cellular level, you are simply the genetic expression of your lifestyle choices!
All humans have the same basic needs in regards to diet, exercise and social interaction.
Eat well – move well – think well. It’s the ONLY hope you have to keep your bucket from rusting!
